Heavy, prolonged and persistent rain has acted as a less than pleasant intro to the October Bank Holiday weekend and it doesn’t look like it’s going to get much better’ says Aoife Carragher, Head of AA Roadwatch. ‘Further heavy showers and very windy conditions are expected with a possibility of spot flooding. Drivers need to bear in mind that conditions on the roads are not ideal and extreme caution is needed.’

AA Rescue will have extra patrols on the roads over the weekend and on Tuesday as it’s expected that this weekend’s poor weather conditions will result in additional breakdowns and minor collisions.

Safety is a major concern this Bank Holiday Weekend as it is likely that this will be the first year in seven years when the number of road fatalities will have increased since the previous twelve months. Another tragic incident yesterday evening on the N7 Dublin/ Limerick Rd has highlighted the dangers on our roads. AA Roadwatch is joining with an Garda Siochana in reminding motorists that speed is still a factor in many incidents and drivers need to slow down.

‘Despite the weather, we’re all looking forward to the Bank Holiday and as always the AA Roadwatch team is expecting rush hour traffic to begin from early Friday afternoon as people try to get the most out of the weekend’ says Aoife.

Cavan is the place to be this weekend as the Virginia Pumpkin Festival takes place.  The largest crowds are expected on Sunday for the Night Parade and Fireworks Display.  The N3 DublinCavan Rd will close in Virginia on Sunday from midday until midnight.

One of the most popular festivals of the year, the Cork Jazz Festival also take places this weekend as 40,000 people are expected to attend and traffic is likely to be heavy around the city centre as a result.

Then on Monday, the Dublin Marathon gets underway at 9am. Extensive closures will be in place from 4am in the city and in the Phoenix Park from8:30am. Dublin Bus will operate with a number of diversions as a result. Bear this in mind if you’re planning to come into the city.
