A facelifted Peugeot 208 arrives this July bringing some significant updates to a the popular supermini that has sold nearly one million units in the three years since it was launched.

As tends to be the case with mid-life facelifts, visual updates are fairly subtle, largely comprising of a new front bumper with a wider grille, two-tone headlights and updated LED lighting featuring Peugeot’s ‘claws’ design at the rear.

Personalisation packs are offered that liven up the appearance of the 208 externally and internally with yellow or white accents, and incorporating a 3D-effect grille.

The headline news is a range of Euro 6 engines that set new emissions standards in the segment. For instance the 1.6 HDi diesel with Stop & Start can claim a quoted fuel consumption figure of 3.0 l/100km (94.1mpg) with CO2 emissions just 79g/km.

Peugeot isn’t neglecting petrol aficionados either with an impressive new 1.2 litre PureTech 110 S&S version that utilises a high efficiency turbo to give offers diesel-like drivability at low revs and emissions as low as 103g/km. It works well also with Peugeot’s EAT6 automatic gearbox.

Peugeot is launching a number of new paint schemes, two of which are a first for a mainstream volume car. The Ice Grey and Ice Silver options are textured matt finishes that are slightly rough to the touch but will certainly give the 208 a distinctive appearance. Peugeot assures us that the paint is exceptionally resistant to scratches, which is probably a good thing as any damage will require the full panel to be resprayed.

Other new technology on the latest 208 includes a reversing camera as well as Active City Brake where the car automatically brakes if it senses a collision at speeds under 30km/h. The touchscreen gets additional MirrorScreen functionality while Peugeot offers new connected service packs, for example a Monitoring Pack that provides a virtual servicing record and advice on eco-driving.

A new top of the line GT Line specification joins the existing Access, Active and Allure trim levels. The new 208 goes on sale in July with prices to be announced closer to the launch date.
