Protyre Formula Renault Championship team Cliff Dempsey Racing will make a welcome return to the category this weekend, 6th/7th July, at Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire after signing an eleventh hour deal with Finnish racer Jesse Anttila.
The 19-year-old, from Kempele near the city of Oulu, will make his competitive ‘slicks and wings’ debut during rounds nine, 10 and 11 of the season and is aiming to gain as much experience as possible ahead of a full campaign in 2014 with the Corby-based squad.
Anttila, who won the Finnish Formula Ford title last year, tested an FR 2.0 car with CDR at Snetterton 200 Circuit back in April alongside the Protyre Formula Renault regulars and turned in an impressive performance. Ending the outing just 0.043 seconds outside the coveted top 10, he was also within a second of the outright pace.
“We’re glad to be back”, said CDR team principal Cliff Dempsey, “For now we’re in for Croft but we’re hopeful we’ll also be able to do the final two as well at Rockingham and Silverstone. The plan is for Jesse to get experience of the car now and then hopefully secure the budget for a full season next year.
“He did a good job in the Snetterton test, to be only a second away from the top of the times was a great effort on his first time in the car. He’s gone quite well in the testing we’ve done this week, he’s absolutely fine with everything on the mechanical side – he just needs to develop more faith in the aero. Croft will be a very big learning curve for Jesse, but we’re all really looking forward to it.”
Anttila has a strong single-seater and karting pedigree, becoming the Finnish KF3 Karting Champion in 2008 and securing a top five placing in the CIK-FIA Monaco Kart Cup the same year. Graduating into cars in Formula Ford in 2009, he raced in the British championship in 2010 and 2011 before returning to his native Finland last year where he won the national title.
Alongside the returning Cliff Dempsey Racing, Protyre Formula Renault also welcomes back SWB Motorsport this weekend at Croft with another Finn, Atte Lehtonen, making his return to action after missing the Thruxton rounds at the beginning of June.
The 18-year-old, from Jyväskylä in Finland, debuted with Daventry team SWB during the second race meeting of the season at Snetterton 200 Circuit in May where he achieved a best finish of 15th place in round four.
Nineteen cars will line-up on the Protyre Formula Renault grid at Croft this weekend with no less than 10 nationalities represented. Round nine and 10 qualifying will take place at 10.55 on Saturday, 6th July, with the round 11 session following at 12.40. Race one will begin at 16.25 with the second and third encounters timetabled for Sunday, 7th July, at 13.15 and 16.40 respectively.
Along with headline sponsor Protyre, Formula Renault is additionally supported by Michelin, The Lubricant Consultancy, Petronas Syntium and NGK Spark Plugs.
