A flaw in the Government’s scrappage scheme which requires a car to be
registered and insured in the name of the same person is now being
addressed, after Fine Gael Transport Spokesman Fergus O’Dowd TD raised the
matter with the Minister for Finance. The problem was raised on Liveline.
Existing legislation covering the scrappage scheme did not take account of
family cars which may be insured in the name of one person and registered
in another. Minister Lenihan has now confirmed to Deputy O’Dowd in a
Parliamentary Question that the legislation will be amended.
“Fine Gael has raised this matter with Minister Lenihan and I am very
pleased he is now planning to take action. Some families were effectively
being discriminated against because their car was registered and insured in
different names.”
