SAFETY: SUITABLE AND CONCRETE MEASURES

The nature of the terrains, population density and presence of infrastructures in the field all need to be considered when drawing up the safety policy.
The creation of special zones for spectators, most of whom are regulars at motor sport events, is part of a wide-ranging large safety campaign. In the domains of speed control, information sharing or resource deployment, the Dakar teams have been working with the authorities of the countries involved. As a result, it is thanks to permanent collaboration that the measures will be operative during the race in both Argentina and Chile.

Key figures for the measures:

57 secure “public” zones on the route’s 14 stages.

25,000 police officers will be there to ensure the safety of the public.

15 vehicles and 30 people from the Agencia Nacional de Séguridad Vial (in Argentina) will be supervising the occasionally massive movements of the rally’s aficionados who will be coming to the “public” zones. They will distribute 100,000 flyers devoted to safety.

6 vehicles manned by the race organisers will be in position in the “public” zones.

1 safety helicopter will be flying ahead of the competitors on each stage.

Key figures for communication

2,000 safety messages will be broadcast by 40 radio stations throughout the rally.

A massive press campaign with inserts devoted to “safety measures”’ in national and regional daily newspapers as well as the specialist media has been set up.

350,000 “safety” flyers will be distributed by Automobile Club Argentina, Andesmar and Pullman in petrol stations and bus stations along the route of the rally.

A video has been filmed and will be broadcast by the television channels and major media web sites as well as in all the buses of the Andesmar and Pullman networks.
