TARMAC 1994
‘McKinstry on Count-back’
History would later show that 1994 would not be the closest finish of all time in the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, when Kenny McKinstry and Stephen Finlay tied on 92 points apiece, but it would have been hard to predict at the time that it could ever have become any closer!
Eugene Donnelly & Derek McGarrity would share the title in 2004 in controversial circumstances, but back in the ‘90s it was the Banbridge ace who pipped the reclusive Tyrone driver on count-back, as Kenny had taken the first victory of the year in Galway.
It had been a season long battle between to of the best remembered cars in Irish rallying, the Kaliber Subaru Legacy of Kenny McKinstry & Robbie Philpott and the Michelin Pilot Escort Cosworth of Stephen Finlay & Dessie Wilson.
Following Kenny’s Galway win, Stephen put the distinctive yellow and blue Cosworth on the top of the time sheets on the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal and Manx International events, but three wins were not enough when the Stephen ditched his hopes of a Tarmac title in the Cork mountains and handed the series to the Down driver.

TARMAC 1996
‘Fantastic Fisher’
The Subaru Impreza proved to be ‘the’ car in the hands of the legendry Bertie Fisher in 1996, however the Escort Cosworths of Stephen Finlay, Frank Meagher, James Cullen, and Stephen Murphy, were there to keep the Fermanagh driver honest! Liam O’Callaghan also showed spectacular speed in a Toyota GT4, as did Andrew Nesbitt when he won his first International rally in the Northwest.
Bertie, with Rory Kennedy on the notes, started the season as they aimed to continue with a win in Galway. Finlay however was on top at Easter, to take his second Circuit of Ireland win. Fisher replied with wins in Killarney and the Ulster rallies, with Andrew Nesbitt throwing the party of the year in Donegal when he won the 25th. running of the event.
The DVD contains specially extended on-board sequences of Stephen Murphy (Galway), Liam O’Callaghan (Killarney), and a bumper cam run with James Cullen, (the championship runner-up), over Molls Gap!
